We returned from Hamburg and the Shipbuilding, Machinery & Marine Technology (SMM) trade fair with more than just exciting, new customer contacts. It was also clearly emphasized for us how important rapid product development is in our field of business. We were provided with clear evidence that our customers really do want more dialogue, and that they are very interested in both the new products we exhibited in Hamburg and the other products we have launched in recent years.
The latest trend regarding product development is that industrial and process-oriented customers want solutions that make operations more reliable at the same time as reducing overall costs. This in turn requires close technical and commercial collaboration when designing new products such as mechatronic thermometers. Quite simply, customers want new solutions that can be easily and rapidly integrated into their processing plants.
Providing these enables us to comply with many of the requests and demands we receive from leading companies. We are pleased that this also strengthens our customers’ competitiveness.
I am both proud of and extremely satisfied with the new products we have already developed in close collaboration between Tempress customers and staff, and I look forward to presenting more new solutions in future.
Bjørn Sahl, managing director
Tempress is now underway with the major task of processing the many new contacts that resulted from the Shipbuilding, Machinery & Marine Technology (SMM) trade fair in Hamburg.
“This time, we’re processing these contacts very systematically, so it’s a time-consuming, but nevertheless exciting challenge. The trade fair provided us with access to niches that we hadn’t previously had in our sights, so we’ve got high expectations,” says Poul Stensgaard, one of our sales staff.
“There’s no doubt that we’re in a strong position in the field of marine industry instrumentation, and are one of the leading forces in this market,” he points out.
Several major marine industry customers showed considerable interest in the Tempress “Ordering Keys” spare parts concept. Ordering Keys is a concept developed in collaboration with some of the world’s leading shipping companies, and it ensures reliable delivery of standardized spare parts to ships.
“The strength of this concept lies in specifying the individual spare part right down to the tiniest detail, using a simple, but comprehensive order key. This means we avoid any misunderstandings when dealing with orders and prevent delivery of the wrong parts. We deliver the exact spare parts that are needed on board,” says Mr Stensgaard.

SwipGuard with potential
Demand is specially focused on a number of safety switch applications where SwipGuard complies with the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) standards.
“These include safety equipment for aseptic plants (UHT) on the pressure side, where SwipGuard is installed after the homogenizer and prior to the pipe heat exchanger. Customers also regard SwipGuard as a suitable replacement for traditional safety valves used in water circulation in aseptic plants. A number of leading manufacturers of processing plants now consider SwipGuard as an alternative to safety valves/ bursting discs, where positive pumps are used as feed pumps for spray drying, for example,” explains Mr Thuesen. He adds that SwipGuard can also be used as a direct signaling device that is both safe and hygienic in a processing plant that includes pressure tanks.
“The background for this substantial interest is that SwipGuard is the only mechatronic signaling device that complies in full with the relatively new European Pressure Equipment Directive (PED), which defines how safety equipment must operate and be regulated,” says Mr Thuesen.
SwipGuard also complies with the German TÜV standards. In addition, there is interest in using SwipGuard for processing tasks that do not require PED authorization, and in applications where other primary safety components have to comply with the PED.

René Laustsen has been appointed managing director of the Tempress subsidiary – Elmetec A/S. Mr Laustsen (42) was previously international product manager at Carlo Gavazzi Industri A/S, in Hadsten, Denmark.
Tempress acquired Elmetec in 1999 as part of a new strategy in which we wanted to develop a range of electronic products for measuring both pressure and temperature. The two companies had previously collaborated for a number of years, during which time Elmetec designed and manufactured numerous different products for Tempress.
The two companies are now closely integrated, with the experts responsible for mechanical solutions located at Tempress, while Elmetec houses the corresponding expertise in electronics. All our mechatronic instruments are thus developed in very close collaboration between the two companies. This became even easier when Elmetec moved to the Tempress premises a couple of years ago.
Elmetec makes a wide range of products, including equipment designed for use by disabled people and instruments for monitoring the energy used in lighting, for example, as well as developing special solutions.
